Raven, VA

Raven is a census-designated place spread across Russell and Tazewell counties in Southwest Virginia, in a narrow Clinch River valley where roads, rail, and mountain slopes meet. The community grew around coal and transportation: the Raven Red Ash Coal Company began in 1906, and Raven developed where a major road crossed the Clinch near the railroad. Historic accounts remember stores, a depot, a school, and even an opera house, a surprisingly full town center for a place stretched along the valley. The coal-camp-era landscape also left company houses and the remains of the Second Upper Red Ash Company Store.

Raven's school story has changed with the coal economy. Raven Elementary served the surrounding mountain community for decades before Tazewell County closed it in 2018 during budget and enrollment pressures. Students now follow county school routes toward nearby campuses, while Richlands handles larger shopping and services. The two-county boundary is part of the everyday map, but the Clinch River crossing still gives Raven its geographic center. Raven is a Southwest Virginia place where a former coal camp, a railroad corridor, and a small valley community remain visible in the same stretch of road.
