Rawls Springs, MS

Rawls Springs lies northwest of Hattiesburg in Forrest County, near U.S. 49 and the former Illinois Central Gulf line. The railroad and post office gave the community a name and a practical connection to Hattiesburg: mail was handled under Rawles Springs from 1905 to 1927, while trains moved through the pine-country edge of the metro area. The railroad is no longer the center of local life, but its route remains part of the landscape and helps place Rawls Springs within south Mississippi’s old timber and transportation network.

School is the clearest institution in the community today. Rawls Springs Attendance Center gives the CDP a daily rhythm of buses, classrooms, and family schedules, while nearby Hattiesburg supplies the larger set of jobs, shopping, and medical services. U.S. 49 makes the trip into town straightforward, but the community still keeps a rural edge, with homes and roads spread across wooded land. Rawls Springs is the kind of place whose history sits in its name, its rail grade, and the school that continues to give the crossroads a shared point on the map.
