About Red Butte

Red Butte is a Natrona County CDP in the Casper area, and the name points toward the county's older landscape. Red Buttes, west of Casper along the North Platte River, was a major Oregon Trail crossing and a landmark where travelers left the river toward the Sweetwater. The buttes also served as a boundary marker between tribal territories before emigrant traffic. The CDP is not an incorporated town, so its story is mostly about placement: a small map community carrying a name rooted in one of central Wyoming's trail landmarks.
