Red Creek, NY

Red Creek sits at the eastern edge of the Town of Wolcott, where Wayne County meets Cayuga County. The village is west of Syracuse and east of Rochester, with New York Route 104A passing through streets that change names from Wolcott to Water to Main. Permanent settlement began around 1811, when the place was called Jacksonville after Andrew Jackson. The name became Red Creek around 1836, and the village incorporated in 1852. A large part of the business district burned in 1874, another chapter in a history shaped by fire and rebuilding.

Red Creek itself runs through the village and is dammed into a small pond on the south side. Local stories connect the name to iron-colored water, while another version recalls dye from a former tannery spilling over the falls. Either way, the creek is part of the town's physical layout and its everyday vocabulary. The 2020 census counted 495 residents. The village's position along the county line gives it a crossroads quality, with a compact center gathered around the water and the roads that lead toward the larger cities.
