Redfield, IA

Redfield is a Dallas County city along the Middle Raccoon River, with 731 residents in the 2020 census. It is one of two incorporated settlements in Union Township and sits where the river, the Raccoon River Valley Trail, and the roads between Stuart and Adel come together. Canoeing, tubing, fishing, and trail riding give the river a present-day role, while West Central Valley schools connect Redfield to nearby rural communities.

The settlement began with two names: Wiscotta, associated with early settler James Redfield, and New Ireland, established by the Cavanaugh brothers. In 1860, New Ireland took the Redfield name, and the city’s later history grew around the river and the brick industry. Glen-Gery’s brickyard once supplied bricks for the 2004–06 renovation of Kinnick Stadium before closing in 2019. The Old Settlers Celebration, city parks, and the river trail keep different generations of local life in the same frame.
