About Refton
Refton is a small community in western Strasburg Township, set between Pequea Creek and Big Beaver Creek in central Lancaster County. U.S. 222 passes nearby, but the waterways are the better guide: Pequea Creek drains through the Lancaster countryside toward the Susquehanna, and Refton’s roads sit at the edge of its floodplain and farm fields. The community grew as a crossroads in a landscape shaped by Welsh Mountain drainage, Mennonite settlement, and market trips toward Lancaster.
Refton still functions through the practical network around it. Strasburg Township handles local services, Lancaster’s archives preserve records from the Refton Store that operated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and nearby farms keep agriculture in view. Refton Cave, a limestone cave along Pequea Creek, adds a geological curiosity to the neighborhood. Homes, barns, creek crossings, and the highway all sit close together, giving the CDP a rural texture with easy access to the county’s larger towns. Its character comes from water and roads meeting at farm country.
