Reidsville, GA

Reidsville is the Tattnall County seat in southeast Georgia. The 2020 census counted 2,515 residents. The town was founded around 1828 and chosen as the county seat in 1832, then incorporated in 1838 while the county's new courthouse was being built. That courthouse role still gives Reidsville its basic shape: county offices, school routes, and the historic buildings around the center serve a wide rural area of pine woods, farms, and small communities.

The courthouse is not the only older landmark. Reidsville has the Nelson Hotel, a historic lodging house associated with the town's late nineteenth-century commercial life, and the Tattnall County Courthouse built in 1902. Tattnall County School District serves students from pre-kindergarten through high school, while the Georgia State Prison sits outside town in the surrounding county. Reidsville's present-day map is modest, but the county-seat role keeps it busy in a way that a similar-sized rural town might not be. The city is a place of courthouse squares, hotel stories, school buses, and long roads through the coastal plain.
