Reisterstown, MD

Reisterstown grew along the road that brought customers to John Reister's house and tavern after he settled there in 1758. The same corridor has been known as the Great Wagon Road, Conewago Road, the Baltimore and Reisterstown Turnpike, and Reisterstown Road; it remains Main Street today. A self-guided heritage trail connects that transportation story with the post-Civil War African American community around Bond Avenue, where St. Luke's United Methodist Church has roots dating to 1880. The Reisterstown Historic District joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In present census terms, the community recorded 26,822 residents in 2020. Main Street now combines historic buildings with an active schedule of public programs. The Welcome Center and Reisterstown Museum moved to 234 Main Street in September 2024; the building also houses Studios at 234, while nearby stops form outdoor art and heritage trails.

Franklin Woodland Trails add a walking destination a few minutes from the commercial corridor. For 2026, the Reisterstown Farmers Market runs outside Franklin Middle School on Sundays from June 7 through September 27, with produce, prepared foods, crafts, themed days, and more than 100 registered vendors across the season. The same school grounds host Music on Main, a free ten-week series of Friday evening concerts with food vendors. At 21 Cockeys Mill Road, the Baltimore County Public Library branch stays open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It provides a local-history collection, preservation station, meeting room, public computers, Wi-Fi, programs, and Spanish- and Russian-language collections. Reisterstown joined the Main Street Maryland program in 2019 and received state and national accreditation in 2024.
