Renville, MN

Renville is a Renville County city that began when the railroad reached the area and the town was platted in 1878. The city and county carry the name of Joseph Renville, a French-Dakota guide, interpreter, courier, and War of 1812 captain who also founded Fort Renville and the Columbia Fur Company. That history gives the town name a broader Minnesota River Valley connection than the local grid alone suggests.

Renville's working map is agricultural. The city serves as a service and distribution center for surrounding farms, and a sugar-beet processing plant turns the crop into the town's defining industrial landmark. U.S. 212 and County Highway 6 bring traffic through, while downtown has a six-block historical walking tour and the county genealogical society's archival library. The crop, the rail line, and the processing plant still meet in the same compact town each season. Renville is a place where rail arrival, beet fields, a big plant, and a small downtown remain tied together.
