Richardton, ND

Richardton is a Stark County city founded in 1883 in western North Dakota, where the town grid sits among open fields, prairie breaks, and the road connections of the Dickinson area. The railroad-era settlement grew in a landscape shaped by grain, livestock, and long drives between small communities. Its place in the Dickinson micropolitan area brings regional trips into the week, but Richardton still has the scale of a town where the school, churches, businesses, and city offices share the same few routes.

Assumption Abbey gives Richardton a distinct layer. The Benedictine community moved to the city in the late nineteenth century, built a monastery complex, and operated schools that included a seminary, high school, and junior college before those programs closed. The abbey remains a working religious community and a visible landmark south of town. Richardton's local texture comes from that overlap: prairie agriculture outside the streets, Benedictine history at the abbey, and the ordinary city work that keeps a small Stark County place moving.
