Richfield Springs, NY

Richfield Springs sits at the north end of Canadarago Lake on the north-central edge of Otsego County, where U.S. 20, NY 28, and NY 167 meet near the Herkimer County line. The village took its name from sulfur springs; the Oneida name Ga-no-wan-ges referred to the area’s strong-smelling water. A 19th-century resort trade grew around those springs, with travelers arriving by rail and electric trolley. The 2020 census counted 1,050 residents, and three national historic districts still shape the center.

Village hall handles minutes, notices, forms, water bills, and the calendar, while a $4.5 million NY Forward award is aimed at downtown investment. Richfield Springs Central School District runs a PK–12 school that serves as a major gathering point, and the village has a library, post office, shops, restaurants, a community center, youth sports, and a boat launch and town beach on Canadarago Lake. The state marine park lies three miles south. Springs, lake, school, and historic streets still define the village’s weekly rhythm.
