About Ridgely
Ridgely sits in Lake County southwest of Reelfoot Lake and east of the Mississippi River, with State Route 78 connecting it north to Tiptonville and south to Dyersburg. That geography puts the town between two water landscapes: the flooded timber and wildlife of Reelfoot, and the broad river corridor at the county's western edge. The lake itself formed during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12, and its changing shoreline shaped settlement, roads, drainage, and county politics.
Ridgely's older working story follows cotton and rail. The town grew on an Illinois Central spur and once had several cotton gins; Lake County's agriculture still centers on cotton and soybeans. Reelfoot Lake State Park, the county's tourism base, brings fishing, boating, birdwatching, cypress wetlands, and the annual Reelfoot Arts and Crafts Festival into the wider local calendar. Ridgely's local clue is that it is a road town with a lake-and-river geography: Route 78 connects the community, while Reelfoot and the Mississippi define the landscape around it.
