Riegelwood, NC

Riegelwood sits in eastern Columbus County near Mitchell Landing on the Cape Fear River, where the river, timberland, and industry shape the local map. North Carolina 87 runs through the community, with the U.S. 74/76 connection a couple of miles away and Elizabethtown about thirty miles northwest. A sawmill and paper mill have long defined the area’s working life, and the International Paper plant at Mitchell Landing remains the most visible expression of that industrial history. The nearby Black Rock Plantation House, listed on the National Register in 2014, adds a much older layer to the landscape.

For residents, Riegelwood is a mill community spread along roads between homes, churches, wooded tracts, and the river.
