Riley, KS

Riley began as Union in 1871, became Riley Center in the late 1870s, and settled into its present name as the railroad shaped the town. The Rock Island line’s station was called Riley, and a later 1895 plat combined the earlier Union, Riley Center, and Riley town sites. That layered naming history fits the town’s setting in north-central Kansas: a small community surrounded by farm country, close enough to Manhattan and Fort Riley for regional connections, but still organized around its own streets, school, and local routines.

Riley County USD 378 is a major part of those routines. The district serves the town and surrounding countryside, with Riley County High School athletics giving the community a regular calendar of games and gatherings. City Park adds a swimming pool, tennis courts, summer ball, and a volunteer-built pioneer log cabin, while the Riley Centre provides a meeting place and family housing. On warm days, the landscape has Kansas’s big sky and humid heat; in winter, the roads and fields settle into a cooler pattern. Riley’s story is a small-town one, built from railroad names, school ties, and steady county connections.
