About Rio del Mar

Rio del Mar is organized around the point where Aptos Creek reaches Monterey Bay. Residential development on the coastal bluffs accelerated in the mid-1920s as summer homes appeared south of Seacliff. At the shore, Seacliff became one of California's first state beaches in 1931. Its defining artifact is the SS Palo Alto, a concrete tanker built during World War I but never used in wartime service. Developers moored it off the beach in 1930 and briefly converted it into a restaurant and dance hall reached by a pier. Storms in January 2023 destroyed more than half that pier and much of the seawall and promenade; the remaining pier was demolished, leaving the ship offshore. Public spaces extend from the beach and the small Esplanade beside Aptos Creek to nearby Aptos facilities.

Seacliff State Beach remains open for swimming and picnicking, with a visitor center, covered picnic areas, and accessible parking, restrooms, and outdoor showers in the Rio del Mar section. Santa Cruz County treats the Rio del Mar flats and Esplanade as a special coastal community, with design rules intended to retain its beachfront scale and use the creek as part of an auto, bicycle, and pedestrian gathering area. Seacliff Village County Park adds a playground, picnic area, vista point, and a skate feature shaped in reference to the cement ship. The rebuilt Aptos Branch Library, opened in February 2024, includes a community room and terrace, an outdoor reading room, group study spaces, a teen room, a garden and patio, and an Aptos History Museum partnership.
