Ripley is a Brown County village on the Ohio River about 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati, with steep hills behind town and Red Oak Creek to the southeast. Front Street and the river make the old downtown easy to read: this is a place where the road comes down to the water.

The village’s most important chapter is its Underground Railroad history. John Rankin’s house, built in 1825, became a stopping place for freedom seekers, and John Parker, a formerly enslaved man who became an abolitionist and industrialist, lived and worked here. Ripley’s local sites keep that history tied to the riverfront rather than treating it as a footnote. Boat ramps, campgrounds, museums, shops, restaurants, and the Ohio River Scenic Byway fill out the present-day map. The old downtown also carries Victorian, Federal, and Georgian houses along Front Street, giving the river approach a distinct architectural line.
