Ripley, WV

Ripley is the Jackson County seat in central West Virginia, a city laid out around Mill Creek and the old courthouse square. The 2020 census counted 3,079 residents. Jacob Starcher laid out the town in 1830, and the county chose Ripley as its seat when Jackson County formed in 1831. The city name honors Harry Ripley, a young minister who drowned before his wedding. That is a very West Virginia origin story: courthouse politics, a gristmill, and a sad bit of local memory all braided together. Today, U.S. 33 and Interstate 77 make Ripley a practical stop between the Ohio Valley and the hills, while the Jackson County Fair and Mountain State Art & Craft Fair draw the wider county into town.
