Riverlea, OH

Riverlea is a Franklin County village tucked between Worthington and the Olentangy River, with Columbus on the far bank. Worthington surrounds it on three sides, which makes Riverlea look like a neighborhood until you notice the village council, separate boundary, and its own history. The 2020 census counted 599 residents. Riverlea was incorporated in 1939 after former farmland was laid out for homes, and the village has kept that compact residential shape.

The annexation question has surfaced more than once, including a 2011 vote that kept Riverlea independent. Children attend Worthington schools, the shops and village green are close by, and the Olentangy bike trail runs along the larger river corridor. That leaves Riverlea with an unusual balance: part of the Columbus orbit, surrounded by Worthington, but still a separately governed village on the river’s edge. It is a place where the boundary line is the main local story, and the short streets make that line easy to miss. That is the local trick.
