About Riverwood

The 2020 Census counted 492 residents in Riverwood, a home rule-class city in northeastern Jefferson County. It is bordered on three sides by Indian Hills and on the north by Louisville/Jefferson County. Riverwood incorporated in 1969, and its boundaries make it one of the small independent city pockets threaded through the Louisville area. Its civic boundary is tiny, yet the setting opens onto Louisville’s wider street network. The city’s streets quickly lead into the surrounding metro.

Riverwood’s strongest landmark is Locust Grove, the historic 1792 farm at the foot of the neighborhood. The city’s own history describes the Riverwood neighborhood as founded in 1961 by Paul Semonin Jr.; a creek and wooded parcels shape the setting around the homes. The nearby Ohio River and Locust Grove put a historic estate and river corridor at the edge of a small city whose regular destinations are in Louisville. Locust Grove and the Ohio River sit at one edge; Louisville’s shops, churches, schools, and downtown fill the other.
