About Roanoke

Roanoke is a town in Huntington County whose 2020 population was 1,762. The first settlement took shape around 1848, after the Wabash and Erie Canal reached the area and a lock made room for warehouses, mills, stables, hotels, and trade. The canal is gone, yet the town's Main Street and central park still occupy the commercial space created by that old transportation route. Huntington and Fort Wayne sit within the regional orbit, while town government remains focused on local streets, utilities, and services.

Roanoke's 25-acre park puts baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a picnic pavilion, and a playground in the center of town. The town's current calendar and streetscape also include a farmers market, Main Street shops, and an annual car show. A 2026 Community Crossings project is improving local streets through an Indiana grant program. Roanoke is easiest to picture as a canal town whose old shipping role became a compact civic center, with recreation and small businesses filling the spaces that freight once organized.
