Robards, KY

Robards is a Henderson County city on a low divide between the Ohio River and Green River watersheds, about fourteen miles south of Henderson. The place began as a rural meeting ground with a school, church, farms, and a half-mile horse-racing track before the railroad gave it a formal station name. In 1868 the precinct was called Robard's Station; it became Robard in 1880 and finally Robards in 1924. The pronunciation—'Robberds'—is part of the local shorthand.

The L&N Railroad's Henderson Branch brought express service, a drugstore, and a stronger commercial center, while tobacco, corn, wheat, and cattle supported the surrounding farms. Robards also sits within a landscape of old roads and waterways: Canoe Creek drains north toward the Ohio, and Grane Creek flows south toward the Green. Today Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 41 put the city within easy reach of Henderson and Madisonville, but the old name changes and agricultural history still tell the better story. Robards is a western Kentucky crossroads shaped by horsemen, railroads, farm country, and two river systems.
