Rochelle, GA

Rochelle began as a railroad crossing called Center, where the first train arrived on October 17, 1887. The city was incorporated in 1888 and named for La Rochelle, the French port city. Early Rochelle grew around general stores, a wholesale house, a cotton warehouse, and the Ashley House Hotel, giving the new rail stop a commercial role in Wilcox County. The Rochelle Historic District, listed in 2008, records that history through buildings and streets associated with commerce, industry, transportation, community planning, and Black social history. The 2020 census counted 1,167 residents.

Agriculture, farm trade, timber, naval stores, and regional distribution remain part of the wider Wilcox County setting. Rochelle also holds the county’s public school campus: Wilcox County PK–12 School is on Highway 215, and the school board office is on Seventh Avenue. The historic district centers on First Avenue and Ashley Street, so the city’s older commercial core and its school grounds remain easy to picture as separate parts of the same small county center. Rochelle’s identity still follows the line laid down by the railroad: a compact place where transportation, cotton-era commerce, civic buildings, and education meet.
