Rochester Hills, MI

The Brooklands district on Auburn Road is one of Rochester Hills' clearest gathering areas. This eastern section of the city began as an old-town commercial strip in Avon Township and kept that small-scale pattern as development spread elsewhere. A municipal rebuilding project gave the corridor defined sidewalks and storefront edges, marked crosswalks, new lighting, parallel parking, public lots, and rear service drives. Brooklands Plaza now sits beside a splash pad within the district. M-59, built during the freeway era, carries traffic across the city farther north. The freeway and the older Auburn Road corridor serve two scales of local movement: cross-city driving on M-59 and a compact civic and commercial block in Brooklands. Water and rail shaped earlier versions of the same landscape.

During the 1800s, mills along the Clinton River and Paint Creek processed paper, sugar beets, grain, and wool. Yates Cider Mill preserves a working example of that water-powered period. Railroads later carried freight and passengers through Avon Township, and two abandoned rail beds eventually became public routes of a different kind. The Paint Creek Trail opened in 1983 as Michigan's first rail-to-trail and runs through Rochester Hills between Rochester and Lake Orion. The Clinton River Trail crosses five Oakland County communities and links with other regional trails. On May 22, 1984, voters incorporated the remaining township as the City of Rochester Hills. A very different public landscape grew from the Meadow Brook estate. Matilda Dodge Wilson and Alfred Wilson gave their 1,500-acre Meadow Brook Farms property and $2 million to Michigan State University in 1957.

The resulting branch campus became Oakland University, whose grounds extend across Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills. In 2026, Oakland reported nearly 16,000 students and more than 240 degree programs across its 1,443-acre campus. Meadow Brook Hall, the Wilsons' 100-room Tudor Revival residence, was built from 1926 to 1929 and has offered public tours since 1971. The estate also includes Meadow Brook Theatre and Meadow Brook Amphitheatre. University classes, stage performances, concerts, and historic-house visits share one large campus, a different setting from Brooklands' small storefront blocks. Rochester Hills' working life reflects its position near southeast Michigan's automotive corridor. In 2021, automotive and mobility firms, advanced manufacturing, medical-device work, information technology, and health care were established parts of the local economy.

Nearly 50 international companies representing 13 countries operated in Rochester Hills that year. Offices and production sites are spread among major roads and business parks, producing no single central employment district. That dispersed pattern makes the older connective routes especially useful: the Clinton River Trail runs west toward Auburn Hills and Pontiac and east toward Rochester, while the Paint Creek Trail continues north from Rochester Hills through former railroad country. At the local scale, a trip can move from a Brooklands storefront to a splash pad; across the wider trail network, the same city connects to waterways, neighboring downtowns, and Lake Orion.
