Rock Creek, AL

Rock Creek is a Jefferson County census-designated place northwest of Hueytown in the Birmingham-area road network. The 2020 census counted 1,471 residents. Jefferson County maps place it on the rural side of the county, with Rock Creek Road and nearby county routes connecting homes, churches, and wooded acreage to Hueytown, Bessemer, and Birmingham. The CDP covers about three square miles of land. Jefferson County Schools provides the public-school system for the area, while county emergency and road services handle the practical work outside an incorporated town.

The April 8, 1998 tornado outbreak is part of Rock Creek's modern history. The long-track storm cut through western Jefferson County communities, destroyed homes, damaged churches and schools, and claimed 32 lives across the county. Rock Creek appears in the same recovery story as Oak Grove, Concord, Pleasant Grove, and McDonald's Chapel. A second tornado crossed the area in January 2012. Today, the place is easiest to understand as a rural CDP close to the Birmingham suburbs: county roads and school boundaries carry greater weight on the ground than a downtown business district, and Hueytown supplies many nearby services.
