Rock Port, MO

Rock Port is the Atchison County seat in northwest Missouri, eight miles east of the Missouri River in the Loess Hills bluffs above the river valley. The city was laid out in 1851 and incorporated in 1855; the county seat moved here from Linden in 1856. Rock Creek runs through town and supplied the name, while the bluffs give the place its elevation and its broad view toward the Missouri floodplain. The area also carries the early boundary history of the Honey Tree dispute, after which the state's northern line was settled in 1849.

Today Rock Port combines county business with a small-city main street. The Atchison County Memorial Building and Walk of Honor recognize local veterans, the Atchison County Library serves readers, and Rock Port R-II provides the school network. I-29 is close by, and the city has become known as the first community in the nation capable of being 100 percent wind-powered. Rock Port is a county-seat town with an unusual mix of civic work and wind energy, framed by Missouri River bluffs, a creek through the center, and the agricultural country of Atchison County.
