Rockford, WA

Rockford is a Spokane County town in the rolling agricultural Palouse, set along Washington State Route 27 south of Spokane. The 2020 census counted 522 residents. Town government, local roads, the Rockford branch of Spokane County Library District, churches, and Freeman School District connect the town to the surrounding farm country. Route 27 links Rockford with Fairfield to the south and Spokane to the north, so grain, farm equipment, school buses, and commuter traffic share the same corridor.

Rockford took its name from a rocky ford on Rock Creek; its post office dates to 1880, and the town plat was filed in 1881. The town's public-service map still follows that rural pattern: Freeman's schools, county library access, fire protection, and local roads serve homes spread among the Palouse hills. The route toward Spokane Valley brings larger employment and shopping within reach, while Fairfield and the smaller farm communities to the south remain part of the same road network. Rockford is a small agricultural town whose history lives in the creek crossing, the highway, and the institutions that keep a dispersed countryside connected.
