About Rockland
Rockland is a village in eastern La Crosse County, set along the La Crosse River between La Crosse and Sparta. The village sits near Interstate 90, with Bangor about three miles away and the river valley opening through the surrounding townships. The 2020 census counted 765 residents, and Bangor School District serves local students. Three village parks and the 22-mile La Crosse River Bike Trail add recognizable public places to a community that spreads along roads and river flats.
Rockland grew along the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad, which reached the river valley in the 1850s and helped establish the village’s basic shape. The rail line connected La Crosse County communities to larger markets, while the river supplied the geographic line that still runs through the place. Today, village hall, schools, parks, roads, and I-90 organize the local map. Rockland is one of the county’s small rail-and-river villages, close enough to La Crosse for regional ties while keeping its own municipal center.
