Rocklin’s granite mining days are long gone, but the city has found a clever way to honor its roots. Today, the massive sheer rock walls of the old Capitol Quarry serve as the backdrop for Quarry Park Adventures, an outdoor park complete with zip lines, rock climbing, and an open-air amphitheater. The stone quarried here in the nineteenth century helped build the California State Capitol and landmark buildings across San Francisco. Even earlier history is easy to find, too. Over at Johnson-Springview Park, preserved oak groves and bedrock mortars show where Indigenous Nisenan families gathered for generations long before the first rail lines arrived.

The gold rush and railroad eras put Rocklin on the map, drawing skilled stonemasons from around the world to work the local quarries. Finnish immigrants, in particular, left a lasting mark on the community, even donating native granite to build the Finnish Temperance Hall in 1905. Decades later, that same historic building, affectionately known as Finn Hall, remains a neighborhood cornerstone as the home of the Rocklin Community Theatre.
