Rockwell, IA

Rockwell is a Cerro Gordo County city on Beaver Dam Creek, about ten miles south of Mason City. The 2020 census counted 1,071 residents. West Fork Community School District operates the elementary school in town, with middle and high school students traveling to nearby Sheffield. Zeidler Park covers 25 acres, and Linn Grove Park adds a 38-acre campground managed by the county conservation department. City services, a clinic, a nursing home, a community center, and local businesses keep the daily map close to Main Street.

The railroad brought Rockwell into being in 1870, when George B. Rockwell and the Iowa Valley Construction Company laid out the town. Rockwell incorporated in 1881 and grew around the depot, with a store, blacksmith, shoemaker, harness shop, and other businesses following the rail traffic. The railroad has receded, but its pattern remains in the town's streets and parks. School buses, farm work, local events, and trips to Mason City now organize the week. Rockwell is a small north-central Iowa city with a school on one end, a campground and parks on the other, and the old rail town still visible between them.
