Rocky Mount, NC

Rocky Mount grew up along the falls of the Tar River, starting as an early 19th-century cotton mill settlement and later expanding into a busy railroad and tobacco hub. Today, the city spans both Nash and Edgecombe counties, which is an important detail to keep in mind when house hunting because your county determines your property tax rates and school assignments. The city also holds a meaningful place in American civil rights history. In November 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to a packed gym at Booker T. Washington High School, delivering an early version of his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech months before the March on Washington. Today, that legacy continues through the Booker T. Washington Community Center.
