Rocky Point, OR

Rocky Point had 310 residents in 2020 on Pelican Bay along the west shore of Upper Klamath Lake. The community sits within the Winema National Forest, about 29 miles northwest of Klamath Falls and three miles north of Oregon Route 140. Harriman Springs gives the area its best-known name, while the lake, marshes, and forested hills make the landscape feel larger than the settlement itself.

Rocky Point was once a stop in the route toward Crater Lake. In 1910, steamboats traveled from Klamath Falls to Rocky Point, where passengers could meet the automobile stage for the overland trip. Today, the Upper Klamath Canoe Trail starts in the area, and a freshwater marsh trail connects the lake country to the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Rocky Point Resort and Harriman Springs changed hands several times before closing to the public in the late 1990s, leaving the older resort history alongside the working forest, lake access, and Klamath County school connections that shape the community now.
