Rocky Ripple, IN

Rocky Ripple is a Marion County town tucked between the White River, the Indiana Central Canal, Butler University, and the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis. Residents incorporated the town in 1927 after worries about river pollution and possible annexation, and early cottages along the river gradually became permanent homes. The canal and river still give Rocky Ripple a distinct outline, even though downtown Indianapolis, shopping, and major institutions are close by. It is a small municipal pocket inside a much larger urban county.

Hohlt Park sits near the center of town, while Wahpihani Park reaches toward the town hall and White River. The canal towpath adds a long outdoor route, and the Rocky Ripple Community Association maintains a community garden, town meetings, and the annual Rocky Ripple Festival. The festival began in 1998 after residents gained the land for Hohlt Park and now brings more than eighty central Indiana artisans, local musicians, food, and volunteers together each fall. Rocky Ripple's character comes from that combination of water boundaries, resident-led parks, and an event that turns a small town into a regional arts stop for a day.
