Rogers City, MI

Rogers City is the Presque Isle County seat on Lake Huron's northeast Michigan shore. The 2020 census counted 2,850 residents. The city began with settlers and logging in 1868, then took a harder industrial turn when the Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company opened the Calcite quarry and port. The first limestone shipment left Port of Calcite in 1912; the stone went by lake freighter to steel, chemical, and cement plants around the Great Lakes. The quarry is the fact that sets Rogers City apart.

Rogers City has a county-seat center, a harbor-facing industrial edge, and a maritime memory that goes beyond the mine. Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum follows traders, lake freighters, captains, lighthouse keepers, and lifesaving crews; the Huron Sunrise Trail runs along the regional shoreline. Schools and city services cluster near town, while the quarry and port keep Rogers City tied to working Great Lakes shipping. Here, limestone is working infrastructure: it built the local economy and still sets the city's view of the lake.
