Rolla, ND

Rolla is the Rolette County seat, a North Dakota city of 1,223 residents at the 2020 census. It was laid out in 1888 on part of Edward Owen's homestead, became county seat in 1890, and was officially incorporated as a village the next year. The origin of the name is disputed, so the settled fact is more useful: Rolla was built as the administrative center of a rural county and still houses county offices at the courthouse on Second Street Northeast. The county-seat role sends rural business through town. That role still matters.

City and county business share a small public map. Rolla's city council meets in town, the city maintains a small park and outdoor pool, and the courthouse brings county records, roads, public health, law enforcement, and other services into the same center. The result is a service city whose importance comes from what happens around it: courthouse business, local government, and the everyday needs of communities spread across Rolette County.
