Rolling Hills, CA (CDP)

Rolling Hills is a gated city on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with the 2020 census counting 1,739 residents. The city's three entry gates lead to private roads, multi-acre lots, single-story California ranch homes, and broad equestrian paths. It incorporated in 1957 after growing out of a ranch-style planned community established in the 1930s. Even within Los Angeles County, its map has a very different rhythm: there are no traffic lights, no public streets inside the city, and no commercial district to speak of. The Rolling Hills Community Association and the city share the same boundaries, so civic life and neighborhood rules overlap in a way you do not see in most municipalities.

Horses, white fences, riding paths, and the open slopes of the peninsula do more to define the place than storefronts or a traditional downtown. The neighboring cities supply shopping and other services, while Rolling Hills keeps its own small-ranch layout.
