Rome occupies the place where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers join to form the Coosa, a geography that still shapes downtown, recreation, water service, and local history. The Floyd County seat was founded in 1834 on the site of the Cherokee settlement known as Head of Coosa. Chieftains Museum preserves the former home of Cherokee leader Major Ridge as a National Historic Landmark and an official stop on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, with exhibits about Cherokee life and forced removal. For 2020-2024, 49.2 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied; the median owner-occupied value was $234,300, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $1,526, and median gross rent was $1,032. The rivers are also part of the city's everyday public-space network. Rome's 16-mile AdventHealth Redmond ECO Greenway has 15 trailheads, follows the riverfront through historic downtown, and uses interpretive signs to connect trail segments with the area's transportation and cultural history.

Jackson Hill adds five miles of unpaved walking and mountain-bike trails near downtown. At Unity Point, murals completed in February 2026 interpret the city's textile and rail history, its role in the 1996 Olympic torch relay, and the economic and ecological importance of the three-river system. Broad Street's Rome Area History Center preserves maps, photographs, letters, blueprints, and business records and presents permanent exhibits tracing the region's development. City buses provide another practical connection among destinations: Rome Transit operates six fixed routes on one-hour headways plus curb-to-curb paratransit for eligible riders. The city announced revised, color-named routes effective August 3, 2026, including new stops such as the driver-services office. Regional history consequently remains present in Rome's river trails, museums, public art, and transportation system.
