Rome, PA

Rome is a Bradford County borough in northeastern Pennsylvania, surrounded by Rome Township in the valley of Wysox Creek. Bullard Creek and Wysox Creek flow through the borough, and Main Street carries Pennsylvania Route 187 north and south. Rome was formed from Rome Township in 1858 and became a business center for the surrounding countryside. Mill Road and the creek crossings still show the compact local map, with the borough gathered around roads, water, and the township beyond its borders.

Rome's best-known historic address is the Phillip Paul Bliss House, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Bliss lived there before moving to Chicago and becoming known for gospel songs including It Is Well With My Soul. The house now holds the Philip P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum, with family items and copies of his published music. The Rome United Methodist Hall and Rome Community Park sit along the same small-town street network, while the Northeast Bradford Area School District serves the surrounding area. Rome's story runs through the creeks and Route 187, with music history giving the borough an extra note.
