Air and rail connections define much of Ronkonkoma's regional role, although the facilities do not share one census boundary. Long Island MacArthur Airport occupies the community's southern side within the Town of Islip. As of July 2026, the airport listed six airlines and 16 nonstop destinations, along with free terminal Wi-Fi. Its ground-transportation guidance points passengers to the nearby Long Island Rail Road station, which is in Lake Ronkonkoma rather than the Ronkonkoma census-designated place. That station is the eastern end of the railroad's electrified Ronkonkoma Branch. The distinction matters in a place where the postal name, census boundary, airport name, and rail-station name overlap without describing exactly the same territory. Ronkonkoma CDP had 18,955 residents in the 2020 census. From 2020 through 2024, 82 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied; the median owner-occupied value was $489,100 and median gross rent was $2,345, while monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $3,121.

To the southwest, the 3,473-acre Connetquot River State Park Preserve protects forest, wetlands, and the river corridor. Its 50 miles of hiking and bridle paths also support cross-country skiing, and the park maintains a nature center, year-round public programs, and permit-based fly fishing. Bicycles, pets, and picnicking are restricted there, making the preserve a trail-and-habitat destination rather than a general-purpose town park.
