Rosalia, WA

Rosalia is an agricultural town in Whitman County’s Palouse region, at about 2,238 feet above sea level. The 2020 census counted 598 residents. Its roads run through wheat-country landscapes, while the Rosalia School District keeps a local K–12 institution at the center of the town’s civic map. The name is also tied to a personal story: early settler Favorite named the town for his wife. The town’s main streets still connect farms, homes, and school grounds.

Rosalia’s most consequential history reaches back to the 1858 Battle of Pine Creek, fought near the present town between U.S. troops and Nez Perce allies and members of the Coeur d’Alene, Palus, and Spokane tribes. A monument and the broader Battle of Steptoe story keep that contested chapter in the town’s landscape. Rosalia is a small Palouse farming community with several layers in one place: a school town, an agricultural road stop, and a site connected to the military and Native histories of eastern Washington.
