Roscoe, NY

Roscoe is a Sullivan County hamlet in the southwest part of Rockland, with 497 residents in the 2020 census. New York State Route 17 skirts the settlement, while the Beaver Kill and Willowemoc Creek meet nearby, making the town’s identity inseparable from Catskill trout water. Roscoe sits just inside the Catskill Park and is known as Trout Town, USA. The rivers, fly shops, cabins, and forest roads point in the same direction.

Roscoe’s older name was Westfield Flats, and its next major turn came with the New York and Oswego Midland/O&W Railway, whose tracks reached the area in 1873. The Roscoe O&W Railway Museum now occupies the former station site with an Erie caboose, station-style building, telegraph, watchman’s shanties, and Beaverkill Trout Car. The railroad moved milk, people, tourism, and trout through the valley; when the last train passed in 1957, the water and mountains remained. Roscoe is a Catskill hamlet where railroad history and fly-fishing culture share the same two rivers.
