Roscommon, MI

Roscommon is the seat of Roscommon County, set among north-central Michigan's woods and lakes. The 2020 census counted 981 residents. South Higgins Lake, North Higgins Lake, and Hartwick Pines state parks lie nearby, while the South Branch of the Au Sable River runs through the broader landscape. The village's county-seat role brings offices and services to a part of Michigan better known for forests, water, and camp roads. County offices sit in the village center.

George Robinson settled the community as early as 1845, soon after Roscommon County was organized, and the county took its name from County Roscommon in Ireland. Roscommon Area Public Schools operates its main campus just west of the village in Gerrish Township. Since 1979, the Michigan Firemen's Memorial Festival has brought firefighters and visitors together to honor those who died protecting their communities. Roscommon carries several kinds of north-country history at once: county government, logging-country roads, nearby state parks, and a festival centered on service.
