Rose Hill CDP (Fairfax County), VA

Rose Hill is an unincorporated Fairfax County community with Alexandria mailing addresses and a street pattern built largely after World War II. The present neighborhood was created in 1954 on land once associated with the eighteenth-century Rose Hill plantation. Rose Hill Drive forms the local spine, meeting Telegraph Road and Franconia Road near the community's edges. Houses fill the branching residential streets, while Rose Hill Plaza, schools, county facilities, and the library concentrate activity along the main corridors. Fairfax County handles local government, and Rose Hill's center takes the form of an everyday corridor spread along Rose Hill Drive.

John Marshall Library is the clearest expression of that local center. Rose Hill residents petitioned Fairfax County for a branch, and the county opened one in a storefront in April 1963. The current building at 6209 Rose Hill Drive carries that effort forward with meeting rooms, computers, a seed library, children's and adult programs, and performances. The branch is open six days a week. Its location beside the shopping corridor makes library visits part of the same trip pattern as errands and bus stops. The branch marked its sixtieth anniversary in 2023 with neighborhood-history presentations, a reminder that much of Rose Hill's civic identity grew alongside the subdivision itself.

Fairfax Connector Route 109 ties the community to the regional rail network. It runs between Huntington and Van Dorn Street Metro stations by way of Telegraph Road, Rose Hill Drive, and Franconia Road, with stops at Rose Hill Plaza, John Marshall Library, and Franconia Park. The park and rec center on Telegraph Road add pools, courts, fields, classes, a spray park, carousel, and an accessible playground and treehouse. These destinations create a practical east-west sequence through the neighborhood: Metro station, park, library, shopping, and another Metro station, all connected by the same local bus.
