Rose Lodge, OR

Rose Lodge is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in northern Lincoln County, Oregon, along the 45th parallel and the Salmon River. The 2020 census counted 1,933 residents. Oregon Route 18 runs through the community, four miles west to U.S. Route 101 near the coast and about 40 miles east to McMinnville. The route follows a forested Coast Range corridor, while the river runs west toward the Pacific at Cascade Head.

The name came from Julia Dodson, who opened a store and post office with her husband Oliver in 1908. Roses sent by her father in California formed a bower over the gate, and that bower gave the place its name. Her diary records the work behind the settlement: farming, hunting, fishing, picking hops, and running the store before electricity and modern utilities reached the area. Today, Rose Lodge's local picture still follows the old pattern—Highway 18, the Salmon River, the post-office story, and the scattered homes and businesses that line a long coastal route.
