Roseau, MN

Roseau is the county seat and a regional center for commerce, healthcare, and government in northwestern Minnesota's Lake of the Woods region. Founded in 1895, the city had 2,744 residents in the 2020 census and lies about 20 miles from Lake of the Woods and 10 miles from the Canadian border. Its name comes from the nearby Roseau River. The city also serves surrounding counties and communities in southeastern Manitoba, giving a small city a cross-border service role. Roseau's defining employer is Polaris, founded there in 1954 and still operating its largest US manufacturing operation in the city.

The plant combines snowmobile and off-road vehicle production with engineering, research and development, and testing; the Polaris Experience Center presents that industrial history nearby. LifeCare Medical Center supplies the other major institutional role. On the civic and cultural side, the Roseau Pioneer Farm and Village, annual Scandinavian Festival, Roseau City Park, and nearby Hayes Lake State Park connect local history, heritage, and outdoor access. Roseau's work and community activity are organized around a manufacturing campus, a regional hospital, county services, and northern-border geography.
