Rosedale, MS

Rosedale is one of Bolivar County's two county seats, a Mississippi River city settled around 1838 on the eastern bank of the river. The railroad shaped its working map: the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley line ran through town, carried farm goods, and later carried many Delta migrants north during the Great Migration. Rosedale's location between the mouths of the Arkansas and White rivers also kept the Mississippi in the daily background. The county seat is a river-and-rail place before it is a highway stop.

Music gives Rosedale a second map. The Mississippi Blues Trail marks the former railroad depot, and Robert Johnson's Traveling Riverside Blues tied the town's name to the crossroads legend that grew around his music. Charley Patton sang about Rosedale in High Water Everywhere, his account of the 1927 Mississippi River flood. The Port of Rosedale, developed in the 1970s, keeps the river's working role visible, while West Bolivar Consolidated School District serves the present-day community.
