Round Rock, TX

Round Rock is one of the rare cities whose name can still be found sitting in the creek. A round, table-shaped rock in Brushy Creek marked a low-water crossing later used by cattle drives on the Chisholm Trail. The first settlement was called Brushy Creek, and Thomas C. Oatts opened a post office in his store in 1851. Postal officials requested another name because a different Texas community already used Brushy. Oatts chose Round Rock, made official on August 24, 1854. The namesake stone and nearby wagon ruts remain west of today's downtown, giving the city's origin story a surviving site along the creek. The arrival of the International and Great Northern Railroad in 1876 created a second center about three-quarters of a mile east.

Merchants shifted toward the depot, and residents began distinguishing Old Town by the creek from New Town by the tracks. New Town became the modern downtown, yet the short distance between the two centers still shapes the distribution of historic sites along Chisholm Trail Road, Brushy Creek, and the rail-oriented street grid. Round Rock's later growth occurred on a far larger scale. It sits about 15 miles north of Austin, but its creek crossing, railroad center, and present civic buildings give it an urban story separate from the state capital. Work is spread among technology, health care, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and hospitality. Dell Technologies maintains its global headquarters in Round Rock, making the city's connection to the Austin-area technology economy especially visible.

Ascension Seton Williamson, Baylor Scott & White, and St. David's Round Rock Medical Center form a substantial medical presence. Premium Outlets and Kalahari Resorts add large retail and hospitality operations, while Emerson, Amazon, and UPS represent industrial, technical, and distribution work. This mix occupies several parts of town. Corporate campuses and hospitals lie beyond the old center, and large shopping destinations face the highway network. Historic downtown retains smaller blocks of civic buildings, restaurants, and local businesses. East Liberty Avenue now links several of Round Rock's civic venues. The three-story, 66,000-square-foot Round Rock Public Library opened there in January 2023, with study, meeting, children's, classroom, and outdoor areas around a second-floor discovery garden.

In January 2026, the former library reopened as the Griffith Building for arts programs, visitor services, and the Chamber of Commerce; a paseo links it with Prete Plaza and the current library. The 2026 calendar put frequent music into that same street network: Hometown Parklet Shows ran twice weekly through late June, Music on Main returned on Wednesday evenings, and the Round Rock Summer Arts Fest was scheduled for August 7 through 9 downtown. City-owned Dell Diamond has hosted the Round Rock Express, the Texas Rangers' Triple-A affiliate, since 2000. Round Rock Rides provides on-demand local trips, and CapMetro buses connect with Austin. The creek-side namesake, railroad-era blocks, and civic buildings form a short route through the city's public history.
