Round Rock, TX

Round Rock is one of those places that takes its name literally. If you head over to Brushy Creek, you can still see the actual round, flat-topped stone that marked a safe crossing point for 19th-century cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail. The settlement was originally called Brushy Creek, but when the local postmaster found out another Texas town already claimed that name in the 1850s, he renamed it after the landmark stone. You can still visit the rock and spot old wagon ruts etched into the limestone bed just west of downtown. When the railroad arrived in the 1870s, the center of daily activity shifted slightly east toward the tracks, creating the layout you see today.

That early shift created two distinct pockets: historic Old Town along the creek and the energetic downtown corridor that grew around the railway. Located about 15 miles north of Austin, Round Rock has a distinct character and a thriving local economy all its own. A major driver of that growth is the technology sector. Dell Technologies maintains its global headquarters here, giving the city deep roots in the greater Austin tech scene and attracting professionals from across the country.

Beyond tech, the area is supported by strong healthcare networks like Baylor Scott & White and Ascension Seton, alongside major operations for Emerson and Amazon. Everyday life offers plenty to do without leaving city limits. Residents have easy access to the Round Rock Premium Outlets as well as Kalahari Resorts, home to America's largest indoor waterpark. At the same time, downtown retains a walkable, welcoming feel. Strolling down East Liberty Avenue brings you past local restaurants, cozy coffee spots, and a modern public library featuring quiet workspaces, children's areas, and a rooftop garden terrace.

Downtown stays active throughout the year thanks to popular gathering spots like Prete Plaza and the nearby Griffith Building for community arts. On any given week, you can catch outdoor concerts during Music on Main or browse local weekend festivals. Sports fans can head over to Dell Diamond to watch the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Getting around is simple as well, with flexible options like the Round Rock Rides on-demand transit service alongside commuter bus lines into Austin. It all adds up to a comfortable, well-rounded community with plenty of Texas charm.
