About Round Valley
Round Valley lies immediately south of Payson in northern Gila County, with the Beeline Highway forming its western edge. The 2020 census counted 459 residents. The road makes Payson part of the everyday map, but Round Valley has an older story of its own. Joseph Gibson moved here in 1881 and established the ranch that gave the area its strongest historical landmark. Gibson Ranch belonged to the cattle-and-horse country that developed around the Rim, when ranchers depended on open range, seasonal water, and long routes between scattered settlements.
That ranching past is still visible in the place names and roads around the valley, even as the community sits within Payson Unified School District and sends high-school students to Payson High. Round Valley's position on Arizona 87 gives it a north-south connection, while the surrounding land keeps the view focused on ranch country rather than city blocks. It is a small community whose identity comes from being close to Payson without being absorbed by it: a highway edge, a historic ranch landscape, and a school connection all tied to the same valley.
