Royal Kunia, HI

Royal Kunia is organized around Oʻahu travel routes and association-run facilities rather than a municipal downtown. The 3.01-square-mile census-designated place lies north of Waipahu, with Interstate H-1 along its southern edge and Kunia Road to the west; earlier censuses recorded the area under the Village Park name. Its population was 14,896 in 2020. Another language was spoken at home by 29.2 percent of residents age five or older. The City and County of Honolulu operates a 149-space Royal Kunia park-and-ride served by TheBus routes 97 and 444. Route 444 circulates through Hoʻaeʻae, Village Park, and Royal Kunia and connects the neighborhoods with the West Loch Skyline station, giving residents a bus-to-rail option for trips beyond the community. Recreation within the subdivision has a different access model.

The Royal Kunia Community Association's private park has field space, basketball and tennis courts, a children's tot lot, and restrooms, but registered homeowners use key fobs to enter and organized sports require approval. Its 3,685-square-foot community recreation center is also reservable by eligible homeowners and tenants. Current city planning also focuses on the park-and-ride site. The nearly four-acre parcel was dedicated to the city in 1994 as part of the larger Royal Kunia development, and Honolulu's housing plan identifies it for roughly 200 homes and a childcare facility while requiring a park-and-ride to remain. In 2025, the Waipahū Neighborhood Board reported that the city was preparing to seek a development partner.
