Royal Oak earned its name back in 1819 when Michigan’s territorial governor rested under a massive oak tree and remarked on its regal size. Today, that leafy identity defines the city's residential neighborhoods. Shaded streets run past classic 1920s bungalows, mid-century ranches, and newer custom homes. The residential blocks feel quiet and established, with sidewalks connecting back to neighborhood parks and schools. It is an easy place to settle into, whether you are walking the dog after dinner or chatting with neighbors from the front porch.

Location is a major draw for newcomers. Positioned right along Woodward Avenue and Interstate 696, Royal Oak offers an easy commute into downtown Detroit and quick access to neighboring communities like Ferndale and Birmingham. In the center of town, downtown Royal Oak is easy to navigate on foot. Main Street and Washington Avenue are lined with sidewalk cafes, bakeries, independent shops, and busy restaurants that spill out onto patios all summer long.

The city is also a major employment and entertainment hub for Oakland County. On the north end along Woodward, Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital stands as one of the area's largest employers and top medical campuses. Closer to the center of town, the evening scene draws people from all over metro Detroit. You can catch national touring acts at the historic Royal Oak Music Theatre, see local productions at the Baldwin Theatre, or grab dinner and drinks along Fourth Street.

Community spaces give residents plenty of ways to spend their weekends.
