Rupert, WV

Rupert is a Greenbrier County town on the Meadow River, where the 2020 census counted 881 residents. Dr. Cyrus A. Rupert founded the community and gave it his name; the town grew along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway after 1905 and incorporated in 1945. The river runs just downstream from the Big Meadows, the high valley where the Meadow begins.

Rupert's early twentieth-century life followed the railroad, timber, and coal moving through the Greenbrier Valley. The rail line turned a remote river settlement into a place for industrial shipments and commerce, and the town's surviving identity still leans on that railroad heritage even now. Today the map is centered on the river corridor and the roads connecting Rupert with the wider county. Railroad remnants and the Meadow River give the town its strongest orientation. Rupert is one of those West Virginia communities whose name belongs to a person, whose growth belongs to a railroad, and whose location belongs to a river.
